What is Yellow Fever?
Yellow Fever is a serious viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes, primarily in parts of Africa and South America. The virus belongs to the Flavivirus genus, the same family as dengue, Zika, and West Nile viruses. It causes symptoms ranging from fever and muscle pain to severe liver disease with bleeding and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), which gives the disease its name. In severe cases, Yellow Fever can be fatal.
Transmission and Risks
Yellow Fever is primarily spread through the bite of infected Aedes and Haemagogus species mosquitoes. The disease can be devastating, with high fatality rates among those who develop severe symptoms. Because of its serious nature and potential for outbreaks, preventing the spread of Yellow Fever is crucial for both public health and individual safety.
Vaccination Requirements and Recommendations
Vaccination against Yellow Fever is highly recommended for travellers to endemic regions in Africa and South America. Not only does the vaccine protect the traveler, but it also helps prevent the spread of the disease to other countries. Some countries require proof of vaccination (a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate pictured above) for entry if you are coming from or have recently visited an area where Yellow Fever is present. This certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and lasts for the lifetime of the vaccinated individual. For information on how long the vaccine lasts, click here.
Accessing the Vaccine
Yellow Fever vaccination is not typically available through general family doctors. Instead, travellers must visit specially approved clinics, such as our clinic – Dr Deb’s The Travel Doctor, to receive the vaccine. It’s essential to plan your vaccination well in advance of your travel, especially since the certificate is only valid 10 days post-vaccination.
