Clinic update 30/4/20
April 30th, 2020Dear Readers,
As we all know too well, the wretched little virus, COVID-19 has drastically changed our normal lives over the last few months: Locked down at home to various degrees, flights grounded, dreadful stories coming from all over the planet of unimaginable suffering and deaths. Such a lot of tragedy. My heart goes out to those people who have suffered such loss.
Australian scientists and politicians have done a great job together flattening the curve in Australia. The vast bulk of the Australian public has done a fantastic job too – some in very difficult circumstances – in following the recommendations.
Social distancing is not easy for prolonged periods – this is not the first time it has been done – it was used during 1918 influenza epidemic when there was no vaccine.
Seniors and those with pre-existing medical problems have particularly been affected – hiding away – many (including my mum) have not been out of the house in over a month. Certainly, cruising holidays will likely be off the agenda for some time to come.
The demand for our normal travel medicine service is, as you would expect, is at a low ebb. We have however been giving quite a lot of influenza vaccines. The last thing anyone wants is to risk of catching both Covid-19 and influenza. So far, the influenza season has been rather diminished by social distancing measures.
Our clinic has been popular for accessing influenza vaccine. Our clinic does not have any sick persons attending. We have extensive cleaning and social distancing protocols, fewer seats in reception, etc. It is safe to come to see us.
Just a reminder that it is important that Australians do not delay their normal medical care which may inadvertently lead them to have other medical problems.
We have ample stock of the influenza vaccine for those over 65 years age, under 5 years age, and those in-between. All the influenza vaccines give protection from 4 strains 0f influenza.
If you need an influenza vaccine, and it is convenient to come into the city, please call 07 3221 9066 and make a time. As the demand for our services is greatly decreased, we do not have medical staff in attendance full time so you cannot just drop in as you usually would – you need to make an appointment – either by phone or online.
Stay safe everyone and keep washing those hands, staying home if sick and social distancing
Dr Deb
